Chapter Twenty

We walked out to his car, and Andrew opened the door for me.

“What a gentleman,” I teased.

He gave a little bow. “That’s what a lady deserves, right?”

I rolled my eyes. “Uh huh.”

“You in?” he asked.

I nodded, and he walked around to his side of the car.

“Really,” I said. “My parents love you.”

He backed out of the drive and tried acting nonchalant with a shrug, but his smile gave him away. “You think?”

“Oh please,” I said. “My parents ate up all that ‘yes ma’am,’ ‘Mr. Hoffner’ stuff.”

We started down the road, and he turned toward Main Street where the one movie theatre in town was.

He glanced over at me. “And what about you?”

“What about me?”

One corner of his mouth tipped up. “Did you eat it up?”

The thought of flowers and his bright eyes under short, wavy hair made my stomach twist. In a good way. “Maybe.”

At the one streetlight in town, he slowed to a stop.

“That, and chili,” I teased.

His smile spread. “Yeah, well, we are pretty good at making chili.”

I watched him, his slightly pink cheeks, his lean hands holding the steering wheel, and smiled. I couldn’t help myself.

He glanced over and caught me looking at him. “What?”

I smiled a little more but gazed at my lap. “Nothing. I just kinda like you.”

“You’re not too bad either.”

We pulled up to the movie theatre, and I got out before he could grab my door. As we walked across the street, he hit the lock button on his key fob, and his car honked twice. That was nice. I always had to use my keys to unlock the door to my pickup.

There was a huge line inside—mostly parents with gaggles of little kids. The only movie playing that weekend was animated and rated G, but I’d take what I could get. Plus, it meant most people my age wouldn’t be there, which didn’t upset me one bit.

Andrew bought tickets, popcorn, and drinks for us, and we found seats near the back. The lights dimmed to black, and the screen lit up with a big green message.

“Hey,” he said. “Did you know they’re going to show us previews?”

I glanced from the screen to his face, feigning shock. “You’re kidding.”

He nodded seriously and pointed at the screen. “See? It’s been approved.” He lowered his voice. “For a general audience.”

I covered my mouth. “Oh, how horrible.”

He grinned. “I think we’re good.”

“Phew.” I flicked imaginary sweat off my face. “Thank goodness.”

A grin settled on his lips, and he looked at me, his expression unreadable.

“What?” I asked.

He shook his head slightly. “You’re cute.”

A small laugh started in my stomach and blew out my nose. “Ha.”

“No, really.” He brushed his thumb under my chin.

It left a trail of heat, and I tucked my cheek onto my shoulder. “You think?”

He nodded and dropped a kiss on my forehead. “Really.”

Sitting with him, feeling his lips on my skin, seemed so comfortable, right. Like we’d been friends for years instead of months.

Another message crossed the screen about leaving phones on silent.
